Large Product Stream with conversion of existing vessels

Silchester Control Systems have maintained a continuous presence at GlaxoSmithKline production and development sites for 20 years. In 2006 one of our projects was to oversee, design, configure and commission the conversion of three reactors, one filter and two centrifuge vessels from existing plant to production of a new product stream.

The initial phase of the project was to create or update the Functional Design Specifications for each unit, and then create the accompanying validation documentation. When the design of each unit was agreed, the software modifications could take place. Commissioning began in the early summer when software was downloaded to the available vessels, and the plant was being run in a pre-qualification stage within three months.

The validation of the software control systems was by far the largest part of this project. However it also included the modification or upgrade of old Allen Bradley PLC2 systems, design and configuration of Allen Bradley SLC500 systems with Intellution SCADAs as the operator interface, and finally the configuration of handshaking with a building management system.
