Client: Bairds Malt (Witham)

History: An existing client had a two-stage Steeping process where barley initially spent time in Conical steeps before being transferred to an SGV for the final part of Steeping. The client wanted to modify the system to allow either Steeping into six Conical Vessels or one large Flat Bottomed Steep.

Solution

Mechanical modifications were made to enable the Conical Steep vessels to transfer to the four Germination vessels. Additionally, modifications were made to allow incoming barley from the washer to load the Flat Bottomed Steep. Silchester undertook extensive modifications to the control systems, including:

  • Expansion of the dedicated Ethernet network
  • Batch download and Recipe Management for Conical or Steep Loading
  • Reporting variants created depending on the Steeps Process
  • Addition of Advantys Remote IO to cater for the additional equipment
  • Alterations to the dedicated Schneider Quantum PLCs controlling:
    • Steeps
    • Germination Vessels 1 & 2
    • Germination Vessel 3
    • Germination Vessel 4
  • Modifications to Local Schneider XGT GT HMIs
  • Modifications to Wonderware Intouch supervisory system

Results

The project was completed successfully within tight commissioning timescales, resulting in:

  • Greater flexibility on plant availability for maintenance
  • Reduced water usage
  • Improved product quality
