History: Silchester was tasked with producing the controls for a monitoring system for a Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) facility. Due to the nature of the equipment being monitored, extreme performance specifications were required, including high availability, reliability, and the ability to withstand environmental conditions such as a 100-year extreme operation cyclonic storm.

Solution

The system consisted of an Allen Bradley ControlLogix system with redundant communication and I/O configurations to ensure the required availability criteria were met. The system interfaced with the client's bespoke Operator HMI via a Modbus TCP communication link. It was installed in a custom-made control panel incorporating 19” rack-mounted PC hardware, including automatic power switching of redundant supplies and KVM. The panel also contained the ControlLogix PLC hardware, redundant PSUs, and earth monitoring equipment.

The system was fully Factory Acceptance Tested (FAT) at the client's premises using bespoke simulation equipment prior to being shipped.

Results

The successful implementation of the monitoring system ensured high availability and reliability, even under extreme environmental conditions. The redundant configurations and thorough testing process contributed to the system's robustness and operational efficiency. This comprehensive approach not only enhanced reliability but also contributed to improved efficiency and long-term stability in challenging environments.
